Native American Heritage Month Spotlight

Kent Monkman, a member of the Fisher River Cree Nation, is both a visual and performance artist. His work explores themes of colonization, sexuality, loss, and resilience. He also self-identifies as both queer and two spirit, which often shows up in his work.

Yoga with Dr. Lindsay Williams

Alumna Dr. Lindsay Williams, MD produced a yoga video for Truman students to take a moment for wellness.

Dr. Williams received her medical degree from the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2013 and is a certified yoga teacher.

She also graduated from Truman in 2009 with a BA in biology and minors in Spanish and music. She also was heavily involved in AMSA and GlobeMed.

Dr. Williams was also a member of the Unique Ensemble and participated in the Ms Black and Gold pageant.

Explore Black English as a dialect or language variety as spoken in the U.S.

Topics range from the use of Black English in literature and media to the exploration of its use and influence when considering status, policies, and laws in the U.S.

Further Information:

Through this course, students will be able to describe linguistic features of Black English, refute commonly-held biases against Black English, and able to identify and explain the complexity of language politics and identity that bear on the role of Black English in American Society.
No previous coursework in Linguistics is necessary and students from other disciplines are encouraged to enroll.

Explore the cultural, lyrical, and musical elements that embody Hip-Hop

Topics range from the Golden Era of Hip-Hop, the International stage, and even explore American rap artists of today

Further Information:

Through this course, students will demonstrate their musical and cultural understanding of Hip-Hop through class discussions, original compositions, and written exams. No prior formal music education is needed nor do students need to know musical notation in order to be successful in this course.

TruAlliance is focused on building transparent relationships between the Truman Department of Public Safety and the Truman Community

Biweekly Zoom Meetings:

Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Goals of TruAlliance:

1) Establish proactive communication with student groups on campus
2) Enhance meaningful discussions about topics of importance to the students
3) Provide transparency about processes and procedures
4) To establish avenues for proactive, rather than reactive change on campus

TAKE PART IN A RESEARCH STUDY!

This study is designed to evaluate the stress levels and collective coping skills of Black queer undergraduates.

Further Information:

Participants must be a Black undergraduate identifying as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. Furthermore, participants will partake in an online in-depth interview and should take approximately one hour to ninety minutes.
