Diversity Month Spotlight!

April is Diversity Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the beauty of our unique cultures, backgrounds, and traditions. Our diversity encompasses race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, age, ability, and more. Valuing these difference allows us to empathize and connect authentically, fostering inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and know they belong. Celebrating diversity not only boosts cultural awareness but also enriches our collective experience, making the world a better place for all!

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion, along with Student Government will be hosting events all month long! Check out our social medias @tsudiversity and @tsustugov to stay up to date. We can't wait to see you there!

Mindset Matters

Ask & Advice Column

Topic:

Managing getting triggered in class

Answer:

When we feel triggered by a topic, it indicates a negative internal response to what's being discussed. This reaction can lead to an increase in our sympathetic nervous system, possibly triggering a flight, fight, freeze, etc. response in the limbic system. In this state, it becomes challenging to access higher brain functions needed to process new information.

To address this, we need to activate the parasympathetic aspect of our nervous system to return to a relaxed and open state. This can be done by taking deep breaths, holding for four seconds, and then exhaling for four seconds, while also reassuring ourselves with positive statements.

It's important to recognize when we need to excuse ourselves from triggering situations. With practice, we may eventually learn to manage triggers internally. Additionally, self-care, including managing stress, sleep, diet, and seeking therapy, can help us better cope with triggers.
