Ask & Advice Column

Topic:

How to change the way we feel when unmotivated or stuck?

Answer:

Sometimes, we need to take a break and rest and relax and then come back to our work. We can get to a place of exhaustion or burnout and we are no longer very effective or productive. So, if you have come to a place of losing motivation or focus because you’ve been grinding really hard on the work then you may need to take a walk in the woods or rest in some way that helps you rejuvenate. Please do not call yourself lazy or something negative for resting and doing what needs to be done for your body/mind. That can get in your way of replenishing as you’ll be putting pressure on yourself to continue being productive even though the feedback is telling you that is not currently effective.

The other common time that we find ourselves lacking motivation or positive progress is when we have put off doing work for quite some time and have fallen out of the path of positive momentum. Maybe we have procrastinated to the point where it’s all stacking up and it appears too hard of a hill to climb. It helps to find one task that is easy and complete that and then do the next easy thing to begin to build positive momentum again. A body in motion tends to stay in motion. A body at rest tends to stay at rest. Action precedes motivation though we all want to feel fully motivated to complete the tasks that our lives are putting in front of us. This part takes will power and discipline as it is much easier to not do work than do work. Play is much more fun than work and seems to happen effortlessly. I hope this is helpful and that you are all as productive as needed to reach your goals!
