Why do Safe Zones Matter?

Safe Zone fosters inclusive and welcoming spaces where individuals of all backgrounds, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community, can feel safe, respected, and valued. It equips individuals and our institution with the knowledge and tools to create environments where LGBTQ+ individuals can live, work, and learn without fear of discrimination or prejudice, ultimately leading to a more just and inclusive society.

Asexual (Ace) Pride Flag

The Flag for the Asexual Community was created in 2010 by the Asexual Visibility and Education Network. Asexual is the lack of sexual attraction to others, or a low interest in sexual activity, but asexuality can mean different things to different people, it is best to ask each individual what it means to them.
Color Meanings
Black -- Asexuality
(lack of sexual attraction)
Gray -- Demisexuality
(some/ varying sexual attraction)
White -- Allosexuality
(experiencing sexual attraction)
Purple -- The Ace Community

Intersectionality

What is intersectionality?
The understanding that various identities held by an individual interact in combinations that produce unique experiences that may or may not coincide with either singular identity.

Why is intersectionality important?
A major part of being an ally is making an effort to understand the many identities that exist within the queer community. As you begin to learn more and interact with people that hold different queer identities, you must also remember that you cannot restrict your understanding of a person to any one identity. People are multifaceted and a single identity may present differently for different people.

Spotlight on Historial Figures

in the LGBTQ Comunity

Frida Kahlo

Kahlo was openly bisexual, and would occasionally dress in what was stereotypically men's clothing, making her a trailblazer of gender non-conformity. Her artwork also reflected similar ideas that were well ahead of her time, with many paintings based around identity, gender and sexuality.
