CDI MISSION STATEMENT:

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) mission is to empower Truman State University community by dismantling disparities  which  prohibit fair and inclusive access to our  resources, services, and  programs, simultaneously strengthening the interpersonal relationships with historically unrepresented and systematically minoritized students.  CDI believes it is the responsibility of every individual to intentionally contribute attitudes of open-mindedness that helps foster  a culture of  respect, inclusion,  and  belonging. Through academically, socially, and culturally responsive programming, CDI  will continue to  encourage  students, administrators, faculty, and staff  at Truman State University  to engage in meaningful, transformative experiences while celebrating personal uniqueness and communal solidarity.

EMMA BEATRICE TENAYUCA

A Mexican American labor organizer, civil rights activist, and educator, Emma Tenayuca played a prominent role in the radical labor movement in Texas during the 1930s. She was a leading member of the Workers Alliance of America and the Communist Party of Texas. However, she is most known for her role in organizing the largest strike in San Antonio history, the Pecan-Shellers’ Strike of 1938, which earned her the nickname “La Pasionaria" or "The Passionate One."

Check out "Redeeming La Raza: Transborder Modernity, Race, Respectability, and Rights" by Dr. Gabriela González to learn more about Emma Tenayuca and other 20th Century Mexican American Activists.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT:

Highlighting Truman's Best

Jae
Jae Cauldwell is a student here at Truman who is currently pursuing a degree in political science. In addition to her studies, she is involved in numerous extracurricular activities, including the Association of Black Collegians, Hall Council, Pre-McNair, Truself, and Queers of Color. Her future career endeavors include going into education law and policy, with a focus on advocating for school systems in underrepresented Missouri areas. When asked what the Center for Diversity & Inclusion meant to her, she stated that it’s her second home and a place “where students can just be themselves without fear of judgment or of not belonging.” She also told us how the CDI shaped her time here at Truman, stating: “it has opened doorways to opportunities that I didn’t even know existed and has allowed me to meet other students with backgrounds both alike and dissimilar to my own.”
