CDI MISSION STATEMENT:

The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) mission is to empower Truman State University community by dismantling disparities  which  prohibit fair and inclusive access to our  resources, services, and  programs, simultaneously strengthening the interpersonal relationships with historically unrepresented and systematically minoritized students.  CDI believes it is the responsibility of every individual to intentionally contribute attitudes of open-mindedness that helps foster  a culture of  respect, inclusion,  and  belonging. Through academically, socially, and culturally responsive programming, CDI  will continue to  encourage  students, administrators, faculty, and staff  at Truman State University  to engage in meaningful, transformative experiences while celebrating personal uniqueness and communal solidarity.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH:

Celebrating Black Voices

2019 Time 100 Gala

Tarana Burke

Long before it garnered traction in Hollywood, the #MeToo Movement was founded by activist Tarana Burke in 2006 alongside Just Be, Inc., her nonprofit organization. Burke's #MeToo Movement and nonprofit focused on the well-being of Black girls to create a safe space for these young women to share their stories as survivors of sexual abuse and violence. To this day, Burke continues to work to end sexual violence and promote gender equity. She has received several accolades for her activism, including the 2017 TIME Person of the Year, the 2019 Sydney Peace Prize, and the 2020 USA Today’s Women of the Decade.

Race and Education: The Impact of Cultural Centers on BIPOC Student Experience

Black Culture Centers & Multicultural Centers help students, who identify as BIPOC, build community, understand their history, and give them a greater sense of cultural awareness. Studies have found that the value of culture centers heightens even more for those attending Predominately White Institutions (PWIs), as they have been known to support recruitment and retention of diverse students. In this webinar, we will learn about the value of cultural centers and their impact on the BIPOC experience.
