A self-described "Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, [and] poet", Lorde's works explore issues centering around racism, sexism, classism, and homophobia. One of her most notable works include, "Zami: A New Spelling of My Name", where she combines history, biography, and myth into her storytelling.

The Disability Studies Minor balances theoretical exploration with practical application, and provides students with a broad understanding of disability history, cultural representation, social justice and civil rights issues, policy concerns, and current ethical debates. This class will allow students to explore poetry while also learning about contemporary issues pertaining to Latinx writing and studies.
|
|
|
|
This course will be taught in-person from September 13th through the 17th. This is a special Ofstad workshop that will be taught by visiting Ofstad scholar Dr. Maria Miranda Maloney. Lastly, Students will be required to meet with Joe Benevento prior to Maloney's arrival to go over the syllabus, discuss assignments and take care of preliminary questions.

This class explores how social and racial justice are inseparable from the study and use of language.
|
|
|
|
This course is to be taught in-person from September 6th through the 10th. Throughout the week, students will work on a podcast episode or zine on a real-life instance of linguistic discrimination. Lastly, this is a special Ofstad workshop that will be taught by visiting Ofstad scholar Dr. Megan Figueroa.

African American Literature
|
|
“What Shall I Tell My Children Who Are Black?”: Black Childhood, History, and Trauma in American Literature and Culture.
|
|
|
Open to All Students!
|
|
|
This class explores the representation of Black children and their history in American literature and culture.
|
|
|
|
This seven-week course is to be taught in-person from August 23rd to October 21st. In this interdisciplinary course, students will have the opportunity to examine critically and creatively literature, film, music, and art about Black children and Black childhood, with particular attention to work by and about Black girls and women. Lastly, this is a special Ofstad course that will be taught by Ofstad scholar Dr. Angela Shaw-Thornburg.
